Family Tree Drawing
Make your own family tree drawing! You don’t need software to draw your family tree. Just begin with your great grandparents in the middle of a large sheet of paper and start sketching lines for branches to their children. Now pair up their spouses and draw new branches from them to their children. If you want to simplify this or create a task for a child then just start with grandparents.
Work radially, just like the branches of a tree, and split into smaller branches with new families. Contact your relatives to fill in any names you don’t remember. Keep working outward from each family until you have every family and every child named in the tree. When you are done it looks like a tree from the top! Cousins appear adjacent to each other in the crown of your tree. Add some decorations around the edges to make it fun.
What is Family Tree Tops?
I love visiting with people about their families. So my kids and I have started Family Tree Tops – Art for Genealogy. It is unique view of family trees from the top using date rings. My design, Living Family Trees, is copyrighted. I think it is much easier to see how we all fit by using this compact form where cousins appear adjacent in the crown of the tree. The scale is 10 years per radial inch. The date rings are decades of time rippling from the middle of your beginning. The trees look natural and generations of branches grow outward from your great grandparents in the center. It is not the same as a sun chart or fan chart.
